Samgyupalace: Unli grill and meat for as low as 299 php in QC

It’s no joke, Korean restaurants are really dominating here in the Philippines today, especially in Manila. One of the most popular Korean resto here is the famous unli Korean BBQ, also known as samgyupsal. That’s why I find it usual to see new Korean BBQ restos here in QC. And one of them is this newly-opened restaurant along Tandang Sora Avenue, Samgyupalace.

samgyupalace

ABOUT SAMGYUPALACE

This Korean BBQ restaurant opened last November 2018. I just saw this while I’m on my way to work. Not just that recognizing because of the small place, but it really caught my attention because I think it’s the first Korean BBQ restaurant along Tandang Sora Avenue.

It has three floors but its space inside is kinda small. Hope they can find another bigger space for a better and comfortable dining experience.

For their service, the staff were very attentive and accommodating. We just had some problem with one of our grill. The grill from the other table took forever to cook meats that’s why they had to transfer some to our table to cook it. Hope they can make time to have a maintenance check from time to time.

For their meat, all of their meat is in thin-cuts that makes it easy to cook and eat. We just had a little concern about their chicken sauce. We’re not sure if it’s really tasted like that. Hope they will improve this. Our favorite were the B1 (Beef Samgyupsal) and B2 (Soegogi Bulgogi).

They have a lot of side dishes but we just noticed something. The plating was not that appealing but it’s good though. Hope that they will improve also on this. Our favorite side dish were the kimchi, sweet potato, and toge.

DIPS

photo_1548819420195

Their dips include the following: Cheese, Sweet Paste, Chili Paste. My favorites were the sweet and chili paste. The cheese didn’t really tasted cheese at all.

DRINKS

Sojuuuuu!

For the drinks, you can have unlimited iced tea when you avail their unli grill and meat. But they also offer other drinks inside such as Soju, softdrinks, and juice.

24 Chicken opens another branch in Legarda

24 chicken legarda

Last January 18, 24 Chicken finally had their soft opening in their newest branch at Legarda. Actually, this one is their biggest branch up to date. That’s why I so loved it here!

photo_1547968936834

This was actually my 2nd time trying out their food and I’m really happy about the consistency of the food. If you want to check our first experience at 24 Chicken in P. Noval, read it here.

24 chicken legarda
Korean fried chickens!!!

Since they serve affordable and go-to food, they are really suitable and perfect for students. I think that’s one of the reasons why they are located near to a university or school. Their target is the students who love fast food.

24 chicken legarda

What I loved more about them is that they are eco-friendly. Yes! You read it right. They are observing CLAYGO inside.

24 chicken legarda
CLAYGO

Aside from that, they are not using any plastic utensils, instead, they will give you a bamboo chopsticks. You can also purchase their very own eco bag for only 20 php or you can get it free when you order a whole chicken. Every time you go or order at 24 Chicken, bring it with you to have a 2 php discount on your order.

If you’re around Manila or near from any of their branches, they are delivering in selected areas with a fixed 40 php delivery fee/no minimum order. You can also check  them out on Grab and HonestBee (delivery fee varies depending on your location).

Now, let’s take a look what’s inside of their branch in Legarda.

Yep, that’s me enjoying their chicken. HUHU. Yummers!

MY TOP PICKS:

  1. Spicy BBQ – If you have read my first post about 24 Chicken, Spicy BBQ wasn’t in my list because when we went there, it was already out of stock. HUHU. I promised myself I will try it again and I wasn’t wrong!!! It was super good!!! You can really taste the spiciness and BBQ flavor! The flavor is just that strong and that’s what I liked most about.
  2. Jack Daniels – If you’re not a fan of spicy food, I highly recommend this one. It’s my number 1 pick in my 1st post. Hihi. Sweet and savory flavor. Ughhhh! You can’t get enough of this chicken flavor.

Balay Hilom Spa: Experience a traditional “hilot” in Katipunan

Last November 30, since it’s a holiday (Rizal Day to be exact), we decided to have some massage to release all our “lamigs” and stress from work and also to regain ourselves from all the trips and travels we had for the past few months. We paid a visit to this highly recommended spa located in Katipunan, Balay Hilom Spa.

balay hilom spa

ABOUT BALAY HILOM SPA

A local spa that is located in Katipunan, focuses on spreading indigenous traditional healing in the Philippines. Yes, they offer traditional “hilot” that came from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao as well. They also called as “House of Healing“.

Here are the services they offer:

Upon entering to the place, you’ll immediately feel relaxed with the ambiance it gives because of the lighting they have plus the traditional background songs they are playing. They designed the whole place like a Nipa Hut or “Bahay Kubo” style. The interiors of the place are almost made from bamboo.

Also, upon seating at the lobby, they will give you a complimentary cup of tea. Well, they will ask you if you want water or tea, in my case, even though I really don’t like tea (but I love milktea, does it even makes sense? lol), I still gave it a try. And guess what? I loved their tea!!! I can drink it all day, I guess? LOL.

balay hilom spa
Heirloom tea…

A brew of organic, locally sourced ingredients from a recipe passed down through generations (best served with Hilot Balay Hilom)

I super loved the taste! Not too sweet and not too bitter. Just right! It actually tastes like the syrup of taho! Or is it just me? HAHAHA.

balay hilom spa
Photo_1543755706697

After having a cup of tea, your feet will soaked in a warm water before the traditional hilot. Uggggh, we’re just getting started but I already feel relaxed!

We tried their signature massage which is the Hilot Balay Hilom (450 php/70 mins).

Hilot Balay Hilom – With every hagod, inat, and diin, our signature deep tissue massage increases blood circulation, improves breathing, and frees your body from lamig, helping rid you of stress and leaving you feeling revitalized.

I really loved how they press their hands into my body and break all the colds that I have. In my previous massage experience, I got bruises in my body after the massage. I got a little bit nervous thinking that I will get some again but fortunately, no bruises after the massage! They were so great! I actually slept during the massage, fyi. HAHA.

Also, I loved the smell of their spray!!! We asked them what kind of spray they are using and they only answered “peppermint spray”! Now I want to search where can I find and buy that one. LOLJK. But seriously though, I really loved the smell.

After the massage, they will ask you again if you want water or tea and ofcourse, I went for tea. Hihi.

ABOUT LIGLIGAN PARUL

It is an annual festival held in mid-December in the City of San Fernando in Pampanga. The festival features a competition of giant lanterns. Because of the popularity of the festival, the city has been called the “Christmas Capital of the Philippines“.

This festival was said started in 1904 but some say that it really began in 1908. This year, they are celebrating their 110 years of giant lantern-making excellence!

Ligligan Parul’s corresponding English word is “royal rumble” or in Tagalog, “Matira ang matibay“. – Rolando Quiambao

To start up the tour, we went first to a known lantern-making store, RolRen Lanterns and General Merchandise. This is owned by the famous lantern maker, Rolando Quiambao.

He started his small business on 1986 and selling his first “parol” for only 450 php. Now, they are making over 3,000 lanterns in a year and exporting some products to other countries. He also named as a “hall of famer” for winning in the said competition for four consecutive years in a row.

Mr. Quiambao showing how to operate a lantern…

He is also the lantern maker in Brgy. Del Pilar in this year Ligligan Parul. He also explained to us the different parts of a lantern.

A parol or lantern consists of:

  • tambor – center part of the lantern; corrupted word of “tambol” or  base drum
  • siko-siko – the diamond-like part edges
  • palimbon – came from the Kapampangan word “limbon” means procession
  • pontetas – came from the Kapampangan word punta” means “dulo” or outer layer

After that, we visited some barangays that will be joining the Giant Lantern Festival 2018. We paid a visit to Brgy. Del Pilar, Brgy. Sto Niño, Brgy. Telabastagan, and Brgy. San Jose.

How does a giant lantern works?

A giant lantern is controlled by a rotor, a large steel barrel. The principle of a rotor is also the same as a musical box. It has a 4-ft diameter and 6-ft in length. Every rotor needs an operator. A giant lantern needs a 2-month preparation.

There is a standard process in making a giant lantern. When they were explaining it to us, it’s kinda hard to understand. Because of that, I really admire and salute all those lantern makers in San Fernando for keeping this festival up until now.

ligligan parul 2018

A giant lantern approximately costs 500,000 php up to 1,000,000 php. But Mr. Quiambao said that they are not after the money, they are after the honor.

In case you are wondering, a giant lantern composed of 10,000 light bulbs and have a 20-ft diameter.

This kind of festival only shows how talented, grand, and world class the Filipinos are.

Camarines Norte: Discover Jose Panganiban and Capalonga

When I hear the word Camarines Norte, I always think of Calaguas Island. That’s actually one of my top destinations to visit here in the Philippines but I can’t always find a perfect time and sched. But last November, I got a chance to visit Camarines Norte and explore the underrated cities there…including Jose Panganiban and Capalonga.

camarines norte

ABOUT CAMARINES NORTE

It’s a province located in Bicol region in Luzon. Daet is the capital of Camarines Norte. The province borders Quezon to the west, Camarines Sur to the south, and the Philippine Sea to the north. If you’re coming from Manila, it’s only 6 hours away. You can ride a bus in Cubao or Pasay terminals.

camarines norte

Now, let’s go over to the places we visited during our Camarines Norte trip. Jose Panganiban is a 2nd-class municipality while Capalonga is a 3rd-class mucipality in the said province.

ABOUT JOSE PANGANIBAN

This is formerly known as Mambulao, it came from the word “mambulawan“, that means bountiful in gold. It became Jose Panganiban to honor Jose Maria Panganiban on December 1, 1934.

My happy place.

1. JSMS FARM

It is a diversified-integrated farm that is owned by Mr. Jose S. Maligat, Sr. They offer eco-tours. Just a disclaimer: This farm isn’t finished yet so don’t expect a fully-finished eco-farm already. But it is said to be a promising eco-tourism farm in the near future.

camarines norte
Not yet finished…

We had sugarcane drinks with passionfruit as our welcome drinks. After that, our guide roamed us around the area.

2. PAROLA ISLAND

Parola Island is said to be Camarines Norte’s pink beach. At first, I’m quite confused how it became a pink beach until I realized that the sand will only become pink when it is wet.

Parola Island. Can you see the pink sand? 🙂

The island’s name came from Parola or the lighthouse that can be found in the island.

During our stay here, the weather was not good. Just look at the last two photos. You can see the dark clouds all over. We supposed to have our lunch in the island but because of the rain, we had our lunch inside our boat. HUHU.

camarines norte
Last picture before the rain pours. LOL.

Meet my fellow bloggers! Jan of Kapampangan Traveller, Bobby of Travel Tayo PH, and Kath of Tara Let’s Anywhere.

After we had our lunch, the rain stopped at last. We had a chance to enjoy the island. YEY!

3. CALALANAY ISLAND

This island is an hour away from Parola Island. This is a private island so guests need a permit before going here. Our travel agency is fortunately allowed to go here. YEY!

Approaching the island.

I’m suprised and happy when we arrived the island. Look who greeted us…

We enjoyed swimming here rather than in Parola Island because of its calm water here. Maybe because it’s almost sunset when we went here.

ABOUT CAPALONGA

Its name came from the word “Apalong” who believed the first inhabitants of the city. This name came from the wild plant called “Palong Manok” that looks like a rooster’s comb.

1. SELFIE BEACH RESORT

After our island hopping, we went straight to Capalonga and spent our night at this newly-opened beach resort. Capalonga is two hours away from Jose Panganiban.

The sand here is not that inviting but its ambiance is really relaxing. You can just chill here the whole day, just like what we did. Take note that they are still under construction as they are still adding rooms and facilities in the resort.

2. CAPALONGA CITY TOUR

The next day, we decided to have a mini city tour in Capalonga. With the help of our guides from our travel agency, we got a chance to visit these places.

Shrine of the Black Nazarene

This is one of the famous tourist attractions here in the city. All devotees and pilgrims of different nationalities flock to pay homage to the miraculous image of the Black Nazarene, whose shrine is right in the town proper of Capalonga.

Must try desserts at Vizco’s Restaurant and Cake Shop

Before we went back to Manila, we made sure that we wouldn’t miss this famous restaurant in Baguio because of their desserts that is located along Session Road, Vizco’s Restaurant and Cake Shop.

ABOUT VIZCO’S RESTAURANT AND CAKE SHOP

vizco's restaurant and cake shop baguio

This restaurant and cake shop is owned by Ms. Jackie Vizcocho. It started operating on 2004. On the first year of her business, mostly her customers were family and friends. Last 2017, her restaurant became popular. It’s because all the ingredients used are fresh. This restaurant is also popular because of their mouth-watering desserts, including cakes.

Vizco’s best sellers!!!

Aside from cakes, they also offer pastas, pizzas, rice meals, breakfast meals, soup & salads, pastries, and beverages.

Ensaymadaaaaaaaaa!

I also noticed that they have premium ice creams inside.

Unfortunately, didn’t had a chance to try these and their other dishes. Hopefully next time! 🙂

Now, let’s go to the main event… Our desserts!!! YUM.

vizco's restaurant and cake shop baguio
Strawberry Shortcake (110 php)

Apparently, this one is their best seller here. But when the time we went there, strawberries were not in season so the strawberries were quite sour. HUHU. But still, I commend their cakes. The frosting was flavorful even the chiffon cake. But I guess this will be my top 1 if the strawberries were sweet. *sigh*

LRM_EXPORT_42282524881046_20181030_093341070-01
Mango Cake (90 php)

For me, this is my top 1. The mangoes were sweet and it compliment the chiffon and the frosting. Did you know that this only costs 90 php?! Such a great deal. It’s already good for 2 people.

vizco's restaurant and cake shop baguio
Blueberry Cheesecake (125 php)

My friends knew that I’m a fan of cheesecakes, blueberry cheesecakes to be exact. I think I tasted all kinds of blueberry cheesecakes already that’s why this was just a typical cheesecake for me. But don’t get me wrong, this is also good and one of their best seller also. This is just my opinion. 🙂

UPDATE AS OF MARCH 2020!

We went back at Vizco’s last February and we tried their Strawberry Shortcake. And at last!!! The hype is real. Their Strawberry Shortcake is the best. We just had a wrong time when we went here in 2018.

Strawberry Shortcake

We also got their best seller cheesecakes which is Oreo Overload and Blueberry Cheesecake. Again, the Blueberry Cheesecake is just a typical cheesecake for me. But the Oreo Overload wasn’t. This is the real deal! I swear! Choose this over Blueberry. It will not disappoint you, I promise.

We also tried their Red Velvet cake. Unfortunately, we didn’t like the texture of the cake. The chiffon texture almost look like brownies.

Red Velvet Cake

RANKING AS OF MARCH 2020

#1 STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE (125 php)

#2 OREO OVERLOAD CHEESECAKE (135 php)

#3 MANGO CAKE (95 php)

#4 BLUEBERRY CHEESECAKE (135 php)

#5 RED VELVET CAKE (85 php)

Jampacked during peak hours!

It is situated on the second floor of a commercial building. Although their place is a little bit small, it still have that relaxing ambiance inside. When we went there, it’s almost Halloween that’s why they decorated the place like these… Such a cutie!

Look at that!!! Mouth-watering!

Spicy Seafood Pesto – I’m quite surprised with their serving. A plate is good for 2-3 pax already. This one is my fave too because duh!? It’s SPICY. Lol. But I swear, their pasta is really flavorful. You gotta try this!

All the food were really good! So good!!!

I really enjoyed dining here! All the food were good and delicious. Not to mention that all of these were very affordable and good for sharing! No wonder that they are jampacked everyday especially during lunch and dinner. JUST A TIP: Visit them during off peak hours to avoid long lines. Luckily, we went there right before lunch time. Yey!

Also, I wish they will open a branch here in Manila. I heard that they have only two branches right now. One in Baguio and the other one in La Union. Hope the owner will hear my wish/prayer. LOL.
